Part 1 provides mental health counselors with a foundational understanding of HIV, including how the virus is transmitted, how it affects the immune system, and how it progresses if it is not treated. Part 1 covers key concepts in current medical care and common acronyms, such as viral load, PrEP which is a protective treatment taken by someone who is not infected, and the role of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in suppressing the virus and preventing transmission. Social determinants of health are covered in the next lesson, and then the third lesson shares lived experience and the history of populations particularly impacted by the AIDS pandemic when it first arose in the 1980s. While counselors do not provide medical care, having a clear grasp of these basics supports informed, affirming, and collaborative work with clients living with HIV, and allows clinicians to confidently integrate psychoeducation and advocacy into their practice when appropriate. Legal and ethical considerations specific to counseling people living with HIV are covered.
Note: A CE certificate will be generated only at the end of each of the two parts, rather than individually when each section is completed. Post-tests will be taken periodically through each module to check your knowledge when it is fresh. Once you pass the third post-test, you’ll submit a course eval, and then receive your first CE certificate, which will be for 3.75 CE hours (which includes 1.75 law and ethics CEs). Then, PART 2 can be purchased separately and provides for an additional 3.25 CE hours.
This course is specifically designed as part of a comprehensive two-module program of training that meets the California BBS requirement for assessing and working with people living with HIV/AIDS training for counselors, therapists, and social workers on first license renewal. You’ll need to complete all lessons in each of the modules to earn the 7 CEs. Partial CEs cannot be awarded.
You are in PART 1 of the two-part training. PART 1 is 3.75 CE hours total, including 1.75 law and ethics CE hours. PART 2, which is 3.25 CE hours, must be purchased separately, once you have completed PART 1. You'll earn a total of 7 CE hours (including 2 law and ethics CE hours) if you complete both parts.
PART 1 has three modules:
Each module is constructed of videos and reading, test questions, and some engagement activities. You need to complete them in sequence. You'll take a post-test at the end of each module. You must pass the post-test with at least a 70% score, and don't worry, retakes are allowed if you don't make it through the first time.
When you complete all three modules of PART 1, you'll submit a course evalution, and then a CE certificate will be displayed for the 3.75 CE hours.
