Program Description
Racism is still experienced by clients and counselors of color. The forms that racism takes in U.S. society today are different from a generation ago when segregation, open harassment, and discrimination were the norm – or before that, when overt violence and even lynching were common. Today, racism has gone underground in ways that make it harder to detect in society, partly because it is so integrated into our culture.
Presenter: Lisa Wenninger, PhD
Presenter Bio:
Three years of experience offering corporate consulting on diversity issues
in the workplace. Social justice focused doctoral education with multiple
research projects. Doctoral dissertation on antiracism in counselors.
Educational Goals
This one hour presentation will introduce the concepts of modern racism and everyday racism to counselors, describing their manifestations in modern culture and in the counseling room, and highlight options for antiracist actions that can be deployed to counter them in our relationships with our peers, students, and clients.
Learning Objectives
- Describe modern racism and everyday racism with at least 2 examples.
- Demonstrate at least 2 antiracist actions that can be deployed when modern racism occurs in a counseling context.
- Name at least 3 white racial affects and explain how they can inadvertently and unintentionally be part of the manifestation of modern racism for white counselors.
Equity Focus
This presentation is focused on direct discussion and further understanding of power and privilege in a racist society.
Policies
Sorry for all the fine print however we do want you to be aware of our policies in effect for this training:
1. CONSENT TO RECORD Most of our programs are recorded in order to create an on-demand version of the training. Your registration for this training indicates your permission to be audio and/or video recorded and for any comments entered into chat to be preserved and potentially included in other formats of the training that Resonant Equity may offer.
2. DISCOMFORT MAY OCCUR The values that Resonant Equity attempts to live by are embracing diversity and creating supportive, respectful learning environments for all participants. We also are focused on challenging systems of oppression, and sometimes those systems live in ourselves – which means that our trainings do not shy away from challenging privilege and unexamined bias that lives in each of us. This means that we don’t promise a “safe space” for those holding privilege and power. At times, participants may experience discomfort as part of the learning experience. We will strive to interrupt and address microaggressions if they occur. And, our equity values mean that we do not discriminate based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual or romantic preferences or interests, political orientation, age, disability, or any other personal characteristic or identity. Our community is enriched by diverse perspectives and experiences, and we welcome you to join us on this journey of growth and learning.
3. ACCOMMODATIONS If you identify as a person with a disability or have other limitations that affect your participation and you require accommodations, please let us know by email to programs@resonantequity.org at least 2 business days ahead of the scheduled start time for your training.
4. REFUNDS The Refund Policy for each event is specified along with the cost. By registering for the event, you agree to the stated policy for fees, refunds, and cancellations. Please contact us at info@resonantequity.org if there are questions.
5. PARTICIPATION VERIFICATION Attendance at all events is verified using access logs or check-in sheets (e.g., for Zoom meetings, your name will be verified against the login data captured by Zoom). Please be sure that your Zoom name reflects the same name that you use when registering for the event. Unless prior accommodations are made, access by voice only via telephone dial-in is not considered attendance, because you would not be able to view the materials being presented. If you have restrictions that do not allow you to participate by video, please contact us in advance of the training per the accommodations policy above.
6. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Attendance in full and completion of any post-training requirements such as course evaluations and/or post-tests are needed in order to earn continuing education credit, if it is offered.
7. CONCERNS, COMPLAINTS, DISPUTES We welcome your feedback about any aspect of our training programs and events. If a participant has a concern, we encourage starting with an attempt at informal resolution. Please reach out to the Program Administrator at info@resonantequity.org to share your concerns and we will reply back within a week. If informal resolution is unsuccessful or not feasible, you may submit a formal written complaint with your name, contact information, details of what happened and your objections, any supporting documentation, and your suggestion for resolving the issue. Our Program Administrator will review the complaint and conduct a thorough investigation which may involve consulting with instructors, our board, partners, and other relevant parties. We will do our best to keep the complaint confidential though may need to share with others in order to resolve. We will respond to such complaints within 30 days. Complaints about ethics breaches may also be filed with the American Counseling Association and/or any continuing education credentialing organization with which we are affiliated.
Continuing Education Credit
At this time, Resonant Equity is not approved as a continuing education provider. Your attendance at this training in full and completion of any post-training requirements such as a course evaluation will qualify you to earn a certificate of completion, which may not be accepted by your licensing board as proof of satisfying their continuing education requirements. All of our programs are evidence based and are designed to meet quality standards for training mental health practitioners, and we hope you will choose to take this program for its educational value in your clinical practice. We cannot provide completion certificates for partial participation.
